Shrek! (Day 2)
Friday, March 6, 2025
If, after reading all of my posts about my wife, you still can’t
tell how proud of her I am, that is a failure on my part.
Betsy Penn just wrapped up her first musical as a high
school teacher and it was as awesome as I knew it would be just because she was
attached (They all are and will be!)
During the last few months, I thought I contributed quite a
bit behind scenes, but after seeing the show, I know now that my contributions
were minimal at most. To walk in every day after school and see these kids
finish a dance rehearsal or act out a scene, or sing a duet out of context and
out of costume, is quite a privilege. But to see it all come together is an
entirely different experience. These kids (many of whom I’ve known since elementary
school) created something truly special. And knowing the director, the patient one who
creates an environment built on trust, empathy, and mutual support to help her
students become the best versions of themselves, I shouldn’t be surprised.
(Yes. She’s basically the Ted Lasso of the theatre department.)
Take a bow and some much-earned rest. (And by rest I mean
lead a Thomasville food tour next weekend, drive the thespians to Tampa for a state
competition, plan a Grad Bash and a prom,
direct another musical during the summer break, and continue to be the English teacher
to your students, best mom to your boys, and the best wife to me!)
